ARE YOU USING HYALURONIC ACID IN YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE?

Have you heard of Hyaluronic acid? Or, better yet have you used it? As the latest and greatest ingredient that’s taking over our skincare products, we thought we’d take a moment to talk about what Hyaluronic acid is, and why we think it’s an ingredient that’s here to stay.

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?

Hyaluronic acid isn’t actually a new product; in fact, our body actually produces it naturally. But, unfortunately, as we age, our body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down, which is why more and more people are turning to products infused with this powerful ingredient to ensure they keep their healthy glow well past middle-age.

As a form of glycosaminoglycan, which is a long unbranched polysaccharide (basically a sugar), hyaluronic acid can be found in connective tissue throughout our body, with 50 per cent of it hiding out in our skin.

Hyaluronic acid forms a major part of our extracellular matrix (the cellular framework where our skin cells sit), and plays an important role in retaining moisture, as a single molecule can hold as much as 1000 times its weight in water.

Outside of the body, this powerful ingredient is being used to create beauty serums and creams that offer a number of benefits to the health of your skin.

WHAT ARE THE SKINCARE BENEFITS OF HYALURONIC ACID?

Where do we start?

The most obvious benefit of Hyaluronic acid is a result of its water-retaining capabilities. This is because it helps to keep your skin hydrated, and hydrated skin will be plumper and firmer, with a more luminous glow than dehydrated skin. To draw a comparison, dehydrated skin often looks dull, lacklustre and slacker.

In this sense, think of the product as a sponge that soaks up large amounts of water in your skin, which will help make your skin appear plumper, reducing fine lines and wrinkles as you age, while also improving the overall texture of your skin.

At the same time, hyaluronic acid will revitalise your skin’s outer layer, so your skin appears and feels softer, smoother, and will give you a beautiful natural-looking glow.

As well as reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyaluronic acid’s skin-replenishing properties can also help mitigate the impact of the sun and the wind on your skin.

The product is also gentle, so it can be used on sensitive redness-prone skin and is suitable for oily or combination skin, allowing you select the right products.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and as such, it’s your best protection between your internal systems and the rest of the world. Looking after your skin is important to ensure it maintains a healthy appearance, but also because it plays a vital role in the normal functioning of your body.
